South Sydney, an overview
The inner-southern suburbs of Sydney are located 4km from the CBD. Presently, the suburbs that constitute this area come within the City of Sydney . However, since 1945, the electoral boundaries of the City of Sydney and inner-southern suburbs have been redrawn four times by serving state governments, in order to include suburbs that supported their party and exclude those that did not. The last time the boundaries were redrawn was in February 2004, when State Labor merged South Sydney Council with the City of Sydney . However, it lost the election for control of Sydney at local-government level the following month to independent candidate Clover Moore, who now resides as Lord Mayor.

During the past century, the inner-south had large sections zoned for light industrial use. However, this is all evolving rapidly, with large sections now being redeveloped and beautified under the Green Square Urban Renewal Area plan. Former industrial areas have been/are being turned into green spaces, or redeveloped to provide medium to high housing developments, office blocks, and vibrant new centres for shopping, eating and entertainment.

The Green Square Urban Renewal Area is almost 300 hectares in size, and includes the suburbs Zetland, Beaconsfield , parts of Alexandria , Rosebery and Waterloo , and the new precinct of Victoria Park. The Green Square Urban Renewal Area is creating new job and housing opportunities, and is forecast to have 33,000 residents living in the area and provide 28,000 jobs by 2021.
