Green Square
Considered to be the largest urban renewal project in Australia , Green Square is spread across 300 hectares and includes the suburbs of Zetland, Beaconsfield , and parts of Alexandria , Rosebery and Waterloo . Located strategically between Kingsford Smith Airport and Sydney ’s CBD, the Green Square Urban Renewal Area is projected to house 33,000 people by 2021, and give employment to 28,000.

Green Square was named after a small triangular park that stood where the town centre will be built, and where the underground train station now resides. The park, dating back to 1938, was named after the local mayor at the time, Frederick Green. When completed, Green Square town centre – which covers an area of almost 14 hectares – will be a vibrant locale with shops, eateries, entertainment, medium to high density housing, and commercial space, as well as strategically placed parks and public plazas to provide recreation and relaxation.

Distance from CBD: 4km.

Transport: Bus, rail and road. Green Square train station (travelling time to the CBD is between 5-8 minutes, while the airport in the opposite direction takes around the same amount of time). Convenient access to major road networks, including the Eastern Distributor.

Key shopping: Alexandria is Sydney ’s furniture mecca. Located on O’Riordan Street are Style at Home Homemaker Centre, upmarket homewares’ centre Domayne, and boutique furniture store Space, while Homemakers Supa Centa, featuring Freedom, Dick Smith, Harvey Norman and 35 specialty stores, is just across the road from Victoria Park – a new parkland neighbourhood that comes within the boundaries of the Green Square Urban Renewal Area.

Restaurants & cafes: Danks Street , in Waterloo , is a trendy café and eatery strip that also accommodates several art galleries and Fratelli Fresh, an Italian grocer-wholesaler, deli and fresh produce centre.

Sports, recreation and fitness: Within Victoria Park are four parks and one reserve: Nuffield Park – with multi-use sports facilities, including tennis, basketball, netball, boules, and Tai Chi; Joynton Park – a flat grassy area for soccer, cricket and large-scale ball games; Woolwash Park – a landscaped water park with wetlands; Tote Park – which includes children’s playground and grassy area for low-impact exercise; Mary O’Brien Reserve – with basketball courts. While in Alexandria there is Alexandria Park and Waterloo Park . More green space is planned around Green Park town centre.
